Job Description:
Applicants should be current in their use of evolving technologies, active in promoting critical thinking, and committed to challenging our students to be knowledgeable, ethical, and capable global citizens. Oakton is seeking enthusiastic faculty who are committed to innovation in college-level teaching and learning, and interested in non-traditional delivery of instruction. Oakton faculty are expected to engage in professional development activities, and institutional and departmental service. Prior undergraduate teaching experience is preferred.
The full time faculty member's workload during the nine month academic year is 30 lecture hour equivalents (LHE's). The average teaching load is 15 LHE's per semester in the Fall and Spring semesters.
The academic calendar consists of 169 working days. Instructional days total 153 of the working days within the academic calendar; 4 days are used for instruction, final student evaluations, or course culminating activities. Two days are designated for grading, and one day is associated with commencement. The remaining 9 days are designated for staff development, course preparation, student orientation, assessment, advising, registration, and/or college or departmental activities.
The faculty member is expected to have a minimum of ten regular office hours per week during the Fall and Spring semesters.
The College expects full time faculty to participate in professional development activities, and to engage in institutional and departmental service.
Requirements:
Qualifications: A Master's degree or higher in English or a related field, such as developmental education, rhetoric and composition, or reading, and prior college teaching experience in developmental reading and/or developmental writing are required. Preferred qualifications include: graduate course work in developmental reading and/or developmental writing, two years experience teaching developmental reading and/or developmental writing in a community college, and knowledge of current research on the success of underprepared students. The successful candidate will teach courses to students who place below college level reading and writing on Oakton's reading and writing placement tests.
Compensation:
Faculty are compensated from a lane-step salary schedule, which is based on education (lane) and experience (step). The initial hiring range for the 2010-2011 academic year is based on a nine month, no overload contract and is from $41,785-$62,057.
Faculty overload is defined as any lecture hour equivalent assigned beyond the full load of thirty lecture hour equivalents (LHE) during the Fall and Spring semesters. For most courses, the LHE value is the same as a credit hour. For the 2010-2011 academic year, the overload rate is $720 per LHE.
Summer teaching assignments are not mandatory to Oakton's full time faculty. Full time faculty who agree to summer teaching assignments will be paid 2.667% of the year's contracted salary for each LHE within that assignment up to a maximum of 6 LHE's. A full time faculty member who is assigned 6 LHE's during the summer receives an additional 16% of the year's salary.
