Job Description:
Oakton has an immediate need for part-time temporary Career Counselor faculty. Career counseling is a highly interactive process where a career counselor helps the individual to learn about themselves, the world of work, how to investigate careers, their decision making style and what might be needed to make a decision. Career counselors work to uncover the obstacles to career decision making that the individual is experiencing. Common obstacles include a lack of self-knowledge, lack of information about the world of work, underdeveloped decision making skills, emotional blocks, family of origin issues, external factors, or a combination of factors.
Career counselors provide individual and group career counseling to students, alumni and community residents. Counseling is composed of a variety of career exploration activities, including interest and value clarification, skill assessment, interpretation of interest inventories, understanding decision making style, assistance with computer assisted career guidance, and investigation of career areas.
Individual job search advising and coaching is delivered, including the training/teaching of effective job search techniques such as how to write resumes and cover letters, use the Internet for job search, developing a network, using the telephone in a job search, interviewing effectively, and negotiating a salary offer.
Career counselors are paid $40 per hour.
Occasionally, career counselors also teach part-time and are paid on a lecture hour equivalents (LHE) basis for teaching. All part-time faculty start at the beginning pay rates, regardless of the level and type of experience obtained elsewhere. Those rates are $825/LHE for those without doctorates and $855/LHE for those with doctorates.
Part-time faculty advance one step within the salary schedule with the successful completion of 2 fall & spring semesters where 3+ credit hours are taught in each semester.
