Job Description:

  • Assess students' needs and determine appropriate services and materials.
  • Develop and teach program orientation and appropriate learning modules.
  • Monitor students' academic progress and provide necessary academic assistance.
  • Develop and procure computer assisted instructional materials and train staff and students in their use. Assist students in learning about assistive technology which can benefit them in their coursework.
  • Recommend the use of appropriate instructional aides and equipment and train students and staff in their use.
  • Proctor, read, and scribe tests for students with physical and learning disabilities.
  • Develop and give presentations about services.
  • Review software and printed instructional materials to recommend their usage.
  • Coordinate accommodations for students with disabilities related to assistive technology and adaptive equipment
  • Maintain assistive technology on campus while staying abreast of changes and current trends.

Requirements:

  • Master's degree in Special Education, Vocational Rehabilitation, Education of the Blind, Rehabilitative Counseling, or other disability related field with assistive technology experience required.
  • Two years experience with high school or college age special education students using adaptive technology required.
  • Knowledge of MS Office programs is required.
  • Demonstrated proficiency is required in the following hardware programs: Braille embossers, Pictures in a Flash, Binding Machines and Tactile Graphic Creations and ASCIL.
  • A high level of interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to deliver services in an environment where there is an emphasis on customer service are required. Incumbent must be able to give and receive advice and opinions and interact with individuals in situations requiring sensitivity and tact.
  • Knowledge of or experience working with the blind and low vision population preferred.
  • Scientific Notebook, Duxbury Braille Translation, Braille 2000, ABBYY Fine Reader, ABBYY PDF transformer, View Plus Braille Translator experience highly desired.
  • Knowledge of the Braille code, Nemeth code for Braille Math desired.
  • Knowledge of the ADA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and their application in the college setting is preferred.
  • Experience in teaching or tutoring students with learning disabilities using Universal Design principles is preferred.
  • Experience in acquiring alternate format materials such as Braille, DAISY, publishers' e-text, enlargements, and audio texts from external resources is preferred.
  • Broad knowledge of course specific computer application programs such as Adobe Suite, CAD programs, Graphic Design programs, Visual Basic, and C++ is preferred


Additional Information:

SALARY: $45,678 annually  
HOURS: Monday - Friday, 8:15 am - 5:00 pm  
 
**This position will be responsible for providing services at both the Des Plaines and Skokie campuses**
